Published weekly, the COVID-19 education team sentiment snapshot highlights information drawn from a survey conducted every week in an effort to gather on-ground intelligence from our education team to assist all our stakeholders (students, Universities, Agents etc.) in preparing for the uncertainty surrounding the ongoing COVID-19 situation. This snapshot presents the insights from a survey conducted with our on-ground education team in India from May 11 – 15, 2020 and captures how the sentiments have evolved since past week. Majority of our survey results have come in before the announcement of Lockdown 4.0 in India.

We surveyed 49 of our in-country representatives for various Universities across Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States of America.

Uncertainty is still a prime sentiment, however, the negative outlook has reduced from the past weeks.

  • The major focus of the education team this week has been Student Counselling (68%) along with Conversion (62%). Engaging stakeholders (49%) is still an important focus area for the team along with Agent Training (36%) and Planning/Research (51%) on how to manage the current situation since the market dynamics are evolving rapidly. 
  • The Education Team indicated spending 40-60% of their time this week on Student Counselling and Engaging Stakeholders, while the remaining time was spent on Conversion, Agent Fairs and training.
  • Most of the agent events have now moved online. However, 64% of our team indicates that only a limited number of agents are organizing the majority of the online fairs. 85% of our education team has attended more than 5 online agent fairs and 15% of the team indicated attending 1-5 online agent fairs since the lockdown. 10% of the team attended more than 4 online agent fairs in the last week alone.
  • Experience/ Learning from online Agent Fairs: 34% of the education team indicates that the online agent fairs are efficient and convenient. 21% of the team also suggests that the online fairs are less effective than 1-on-1 counselling while 66% of the team disagrees and indicated online fairs are more effective or as effective as 1-on-1 counselling. 26% of the team also indicated that the turnout to the online agent fairs is low. However, the students attending the fair are more focused (37%).
  • Suggestions to improve online Fairs: 58% team indicated improving the pre-counselling of students for improving the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the online fairs.  26% team also suggests that the fairs should have group counselling slots along with individual dedicated time slot for each student (34%). 34% of the team also indicated a need for training all stakeholders before the event for the online fairs to be more effective. 
  • For reaching out to students for undergraduate programs, 33% of the education team is focussing on special agent events, 18% on career seminars by counsellors and 19% by career platform for schools. The team is also reaching out to students through university portals, school counsellors and webinars in association with Education New Zealand. 
  • Key Challenges: Uncertainty around intake/Visa (79%) and Student queries around the impact of COVID-19 (77%) continue to be key challenges for the team to address along with the delay in results (55%).

 


Top queries from students:

Our team continues to notice a high number of deferral/ refund related queries/requests (77%) this week as well. University Preparedness for COVID-19 (77%) along with Visa related queries (61%) are important concerns for students. We noticed a huge upsurge in extension requests (67%) from students last week, a 13% increase from the previous week. A significant number of students are also raising concerns regarding the impact of online classes on the degree (65%). In order to address these challenges, institutions are providing quick/regular updates to the students and 21% of the institutions have also started offering online start for the upcoming intake, a nominal 2% increase from the past week while the remaining institutions are still undecided.

This week, we will share a report on how the agent sentiments have evolved in the last 2 weeks along with a 1st edition of the consolidated report on agent sentiments and how they have evolved in the past 3 fortnights.
