Claremont, CA, March 14, 2017 – The US-based South Asian Studies Association, a thought leader within the international South Asian studies’ field, has announced that its 11th Anniversary Conference, SASA 2017, will be held at Claremont McKenna College, in Claremont, California, on March 25 and 26. Over this weekend, more than 50 scholarly papers will be presented within 20 individual panel sessions and three major plenary sessions.
Speakers at SASA 2017 include leading South Asian specialists from universities and colleges from across North America, Asia, and Europe. The broad canvas of South Asia fields of study will be addressed including the region’s history, culture, governance, business and economics, religions, philosophy, and arts. A special afternoon plenary session will feature Claremont McKenna College President, Dr. Hiram Chodosh, author of the 2016 book, Uniform Civil Code of India: A Blueprint for Scholarly Discourse. Dr. Chodosh’s co-author, professor Shimon Shetreet, of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, will travel from Israel to discuss the book at SASA 2017.
The Saturday evening SASA 2017 Awards Banquet will be highlighted by a keynote address from India Consul General, Ambassador V. Ashok, who’ll address the evolving Indian economy, demonetization, and the forthcoming introduction of India’s first goods and services tax. That evening will also feature presentation of SASA’s 2017 Exemplar Awards, to honorees Dr. Rafiq Dossani (for Academic Achievement),and Pratima and Navin Doshi, (for Community Service). They will also present talks at the Banquet.

Now in its second decade, the South Asian Studies Association (www.SAsia.org) is an alliance of South Asia focused scholars and academicians from the US and elsewhere globally. SASA hosts annual educational conferences featuring participants from around the world, it publishes the scholarly journal Exemplar, which focuses on cultural understanding linked to contemporary South Asian economic and political concerns, and it publishes books with this same focus. SASA also makes annual awards which celebrate lifelong academic contributions to the field of South Asian Studies, as well as a Community Service Award, to non-academic supporters of South Asia.
